You can choose to have your home monitored security system connected to a professional company who will keep track of the system. These companies do however charge a monthly fee but the entire monitoring process is carried out by a team of professionals who are experts in home security.

The system that you have installed in your home will be connected to the central control system of the security company where the staff will be based. This will usually be done by a protected telephone line. All signals from the control panel will be monitored by the staff at the control centre to see if anything is wrong.

If a part of the security system such as a motion sensor or magnetic switch is triggered, then a signal will be sent back to the security centre who will then alert the police. This means that the police may already be on their way to you before you even realise there is a problem. In addition to contacting the police, the system can also send an alert to your mobile phone which is very helpful if you are working away from home or are away on holiday.

As a backup though a password can be put in place so that needless police call outs are avoided. The central security company will attempt to contact the home owner and if they supply the correct password, the call to the police will not be made.

There of course will be occasions when you trigger the alarm by accident, in these cases you will have between thirty and forty five seconds to enter you security code into the keypad to avoid a call being made to the police.

The home security system is connected to the systems of the security company by a phone line, of course it is possible for this phone line to be tampered with. Therefore the security company will try to contact you if for any reason the signal between your home and their computers is lost.

For this reason you must supply the security company with a mobile or cell number so that they can contact you if the regular phone line is down. They will confirm with you that the phone line is down before alerting the police.
